Kaizan-do

This hall is dedicated to Shoku Shonin, the founder of Shosyazan Engyoji Temple. As a symbol of the 1,000 year history of Shoshazan, it serves as the core of Shosyazan Engyoji Temple’s Oku-no-in (inner sanctuary), where the torch continues to burn whilst rituals are performed in the mornings and evenings. The current Kaizan-do is a masterpiece of the architecture style of the early Edo period. It is said that the sumo wrestler carvings at the four corners were created by Jingoro Hidari, and there is a well-known legend that one of the carvings in the northwestern eave ran away because it couldn’t bear the weight of the building.

Goho-do

Dating from 1559 (Eiroku 2nd yr), Goho-do is two small shrines in front of Kaizan-do in Oku-no-in (the inner sanctuary). Facing the shrines, Oto-tensha Shrine is on the right, and Waka-tensha Shrine is on the left. Gohodo is dedicated to the guardians of Shoku Shonin (the founder of Shosha-zan). These two shrines are constructed in the Kasuga style of the same size and design, and their roofs are covered with Hiwada (Japanese cypress bark), characterized by the shrine architectural method at the end of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). Though the shrines are small, the prominent techniques are used in detail.

The boy genius, Ototen, is said to be the incarnation of the deity Fudo, who is enshrined in this hall.
